Author: Michelle Ruiz Keil

Publisher: Soho Press

Release Date: June 18, 2019

Page Count: 360 pages

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, LGBT

Summary:

Michelle Ruiz Keil’s YA fantasy debut about love, found family, and healing is an ode to post-punk San Francisco through the eyes of a Mexican-American girl.

Seventeen-year-old Xochi is alone in San Francisco, running from her painful past: the mother who abandoned her, the man who betrayed her. Then one day, she meets Pallas, a precocious twelve-year-old who lives with her rockstar family in one of the city’s storybook Victorians. Xochi accepts a position as Pallas’s live-in governess and quickly finds her place in their household, which is relaxed and happy despite the band’s larger-than-life fame.

But on the night of the Vernal Equinox, as a concert afterparty rages in the house below, Xochi and Pallas accidentally summon a pair of ancient creatures devoted to avenging the wrongs of Xochi’s adolescence. She would do anything to preserve her new life, but with the creatures determined to exact vengeance on those who’ve hurt her, no one is safe—not the family she’s chosen, nor the one she left behind.

War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the king on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. *Review* Match me If You Can- Tiana Smith

34993791Mia’s best friend Robyn is known for her matchmaking skills, which is perfect, because homecoming is just around the corner. But Robyn refuses to set Mia up with the guy of her dreams, which forces Mia to take matters into her own hands. She uses Robyn’s matchmaking service to make sure popular Vince Demetrius falls for her.

Vince asks her out, but Mia doesn’t count on Logan, the persistent school newspaper photographer who seems to like her out of the blue. Now she has to choose between Vince – the guy she knows is right for her – and Logan, who insists that she give him a chance. And she needs to make sure Robyn doesn’t find out that Mia’s been matchmaking behind her back.

Mia has two weeks before homecoming. Can she fix the mess she made or will she have to kiss her perfect match goodbye forever?

IMG_2250

My Review:

“I can help you get a boyfriend. All you do is scream and run away when they chase you.”

Mia has been crushing really hard on Vince and decides that she is going to take matters into her own hands. Her best friend, Robyn has a side business where you pay her a small fee, fill out a form, and she’ll romantically match you with your true soul mate. Mia logs into her friends email and responds to Vince’s form matching Mia to him. She even makes a suggestion as to where he should take her.

Who Mia really gets paired with is Logan. He’s cute but he’s absolutely no Vince. When Vince makes this grand gesture to ask Mia out, what she doesn’t expect is for Logan to get in her way and into her heart.

Now she must decide what and who is more important to her, Vince, the all-star soccer player who has the looks or Logan, the photographer who makes her heart race and who can melt anything with his smile.

Can she fix all of this before the big Homecoming dance? Or will Mia’s perfect life crumble with her in it?

This book was cute and really funny. Most of the book had me overjoyed and laughing my ass off. But it did start off a little slow and lost me in some places. Plus, Mia wasn’t the best of characters. She went out of her way to do some terrible things and she does get some backlash but not as much as she should have.

Parts of this reminded me of my relationship with my Husband. You’re my favorite is the phrase we repeat to each other every day and it’s something that brings up closer together.

Overall, this was a great read with swoon worthy moments. It was super fast paced and can be read in one sitting. Logan will instantly steal your heart and you’ll definitely want to get into photography after this. The fluffiness will bring you out of any reading slump.

Nothing in life is ever perfect but with a little help from your friends, anything is possible.

Beware! If you have not read Furyborn, please do not read this review, as it contains spoilers. If you would like to read my review of Furyborn, click here.Thank you to the publisher for the review copy in exchange for an honest review.

Holy cow, what a ride! I thought Furborn was amazing, but Kingsbane was outstanding and emotional and beautiful. Kingsbane left me emotionally drained for days; even now just reflecting on how much happened in that book brings back all the emotions.

Sometimes sequels don’t live up to expectations or the hype of the first book. Kingsbane outshines Furyborn and brings to the table a continuation of the epic fantasy world Claire has created. The writing, the characters, the world…everything is so well done and breathtaking. Kingsbane is easily one of the best sequels I have read in the YA fantasy genre.

Claire Legrand has proven to be a phenomenal fantasy writer. She weaves words together to create a captivating and poetic world that any reader can get lost in. Two worlds fitted across time make for a magical story and epic world building, which Claire succeeds at creating. The world in Furyborn and Kingsbane is vast, but Claire’s writing and descriptions bring the world to life and help to not make the world feel so big. She’s truly a talented fantasy writer and I cannot wait to see what she does with the third book.

“She had felt in that moment, that she was a mere vessel. A conduit between the power in her blood and the flames overhead, licking for a taste. Would there ever come a time when she could use her power and not feel as if it was using her?”

Rielle continues to be the butt-kicking hero we all want, but as we learned in Furyborn, she’s not destined to be the hero, but the villain. But even throughout this book, as her mind and her journey start to take a darker turn, she still remains the powerful girl we all loved in Furyborn. However, like all great heroes, temptation can easily sway a hero to do things one normally would not do. And that starts to be the case for Rielle, even as she fights Corien and even as she tries to prevent the world (and her closest friends) from seeing what she is truly becoming. She doesn’t want Audric to see her differently, but how can Rielle prevent that when darkness starts to tempt her?

Eliana, on the other hand, does not want to become what she is destined to be: the Sun Queen. She would rather neglect her powers and her future, fearing the possibility of her becoming just like her mother, Rielle. She struggles coming to terms with her new life and what she represents to the people. She struggles with how her life has drastically changed and how there is no going back. The only path is forward and watching Eliana’s character development throughout Kingsbane reminds me how we all have journeys and how, eventually, we all have to find out who we are meant to be. So, overall, both of these girls’ characterizations in Kingsbane is phenomenal and well written.

Don’t go into this book underestimating these two girls: they are powerful and inspiring and fierce. Though they struggle with defeat and living up to their purpose, they both prove that they have what it takes to handle any battle, any hardship that is thrown their way. And just seeing these two characters go through so much (good and bad and evil) reminds me just how fragile, yet strong they really are and that both are still human.

Kingsbane is an outstanding sequel to Furyborn and, in my opinion, some of Claire’s best work. I honestly cannot wait for book 3. I am so invested in these characters and this world that I need to know what happens and if there’s a happy ending for a few of the characters (one can hope).

Kingsbane is out in the world today, so go grab your copy! And if you have not read Furyborn yet, I highly recommend!

*Blog Tour + Giveaway* The Bone Charmer by Breeana Shields

TheBoneCharmer_Cover (1)Title: The Bone Charmer

Author: Breeana Shields

Publisher: Page Street Kids

Release Date: May 21st 2019

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

In Saskia’s world, bones are the source of all power. They tell the future, reveal the past, and expose secrets in the present. Each village has a designated seer who performs readings for the townsfolk, and in Midwood, the Bone Charmer is Saskia’s mother.

On the day of her kenning—a special bone reading that determines the apprenticeships of all seventeen-year-olds—Saskia’s worst fears come true. She receives an assignment to train as a Bone Charmer, like her mother, and even worse, a match-making reading that pairs her with Bram—a boy who has suspicious tattoos that hint of violence.

Saskia knows her mother saw multiple paths for her, yet chose one she knew Saskia wouldn’t want. Their argument leads to a fracture in one of the bones. Broken bones are always bad luck, but this particular set of bones have been infused with extra magic, and so the break has devastating consequences—Saskia’s future has split as well. Now she will live her two potential paths simultaneously. Only one future can survive. And Saskia’s life is in danger in both.

My Review

“Gran said once that in families with long lines of bone magic – families like ours – power is like a fire that burns hotter with each new generation. She meant it to be encouraging, and she had pride in her eyes when she said it, but by then I already knew the truth – the stronger the blaze, the harder it is to control. And the faster it destroys.”

The Bone Charmer tells the tale of Saskia and her journeys after her kenning. Her Bone Charmer mother has the power to see multiple future paths for Saskia, but Saskia believes her mother only picks the path she will despise the most: the path of a Bone Charmer and with the guy she does not love. But all actions have consequences and Saskia’s future gets split into two paths after her bone fractures. And in each path, she faces unforeseen dangers that will not only harm her, but the people she holds close. Saskia must determine which path is meant to survive and be her future before its too late.

Saskia is a fun and wholly original character that doesn’t want her future to be defined by a kenning. She knows what she wants to do and, yet, it’s tradition to have a kenning. I would have liked to have seen a bit more character development on Saskia, but I have a feeling the sequel will unveil even more of Saskia’s character and her future.

Breeana Shields knows how to weave a world. The world in The Bone Charmer is fascinating and beautifully depicted. Both of Saskia’s paths are well-written and uniquely created. At first, it was a bit confusing trying to determine which path I was reading but once I figured that out, the story started to pick up and really developed into a fun adventurous story. And I enjoyed the aspect of Saskia’s future being broken into two paths. It made me think of what would happen if my future broke into two paths: what path would I want to be my future?

“The past is a rigid and unchangeable thing.”

I also really enjoyed the idea of bone magic and blood. I found the idea to be fascinating and seeing Saskia explore bone magic in one of her paths was really interesting. A Bone Charmer has the capability to use magic to either see the past, present, or future, but they cannot see all three. Saskia can see the present but not the past or future, which is a really neat concept. All three are wonderfully explored in The Bone Charmer, and I thought it was unique to see just how different bone magic is used for each reading.

Anyone who knows me (and my love for the fantasy genre) knows how much I enjoy a good plot twist. And, boy, does The Bone Charmer have plot twists. The Bone Charmer kept me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. I wanted to know the potential outcome of each of Saskia’s paths and what that did for her character development.

Overall, The Bone Charmer is captivating and weaves together magic and the possibilities of one’s future. I look forward to seeing how Saskia’s story continues in the sequel!

The Bone Charmer comes out May 21, 2019.
