Happy Friday Evening!

I’m writing this post with my brand new laptop and I’m hoping this will help me blog more. My fingers are crossed!

This week I’m going with a book that I just started this morning and it’s blowing my mind so far. Have you guys read Verity by Colleen Hoover? I would suggest this book. She definitely stepped out of her comfort zone for this one. Enjoy!!

41957126     Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

A standalone romantic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, releasing December 18th.

My Review

“***** screamed, turned, and ducked as the knife in the killer’s hand lunged for her throat. The blade flashed an electric blue as lightning colored the sky.”

Horror mysteries should always leave you guessing up until the very end. But even though I knew who this mysterious murderer was, the reasoning behind it will shock you.

*queue the spooky slasher music*

Trask Academy is the performing arts school that everyone wants to attend if they want to make it anywhere. It has a reputation of putting talented kids into the roles of a lifetime. But it also comes with a deep dark reputation.

Eighteen years ago, a blazing fire destroyed the performance stage. It took the life of a young thespian and the center is now under construction.

With new students coming to the Academy, stories become legendary and history starts to repeat itself. Seniors start dropping like flies and everyone is a suspect.

Will the identity of the mystery slasher be revealed before all lives are lost? Or will the show go on?

An end to any story can make or break the entire book, especially with slasher books. But this one did not disappoint. The characters were interesting in their own special kind of way and the way they talked reminded of certain slasher films that we all love. It was like reliving things from the past and it was awesome.

Jinxed was a spooky read throughout and it will leave you wide-eyed and gasping as you figure out what the hell is going on.

*Arc Review* That’s Not What I Heard- Stephanie Kate Strohm

39983680    What did you hear?

Kimberly Landis-Lilley and Teddy Lin are over. Yes, the Kim and Teddy broke up.

At least that’s what Phil Spooner thinks he overheard and then told Jess Howard, Kim’s best friend. Something about Teddy not liking Kim’s Instas? Or was it that Teddy is moving to Italy and didn’t want to do long distance? Or that Kim slid into someone else’s DMs?

Jess told her boyfriend, Elvis, that he needs to be on Kim’s side. Especially if he wants to keep her as his girlfriend. But Elvis is also Teddy’s best friend.

Now, Kim’s run out of school for the day. Jess is furious. Elvis is confused. And half the lunch period won’t talk to Teddy. Even the teachers have taken sides.

William Henry Harrison High will never be the same again!

My Review:

“But maybe that was part of saying goodbye- you were never really ready.”

William Henry Harrison High is in total disarray. The “IT” couple has split up and everyone is losing their minds. But how did it happen? And why? I’ve heard that it was…. and she heard it was because….. As rumors start to fly and people start taking sides, will the school will never get back on track?

This book is the high school version of the telephone game. Someone tells a secret and it spreads to someone else with something else added to it and by the time it comes back to you, it’s not even what you said. That game is this book.

It was an interesting concept but kind of dull. I was hoping for more laugh out loud moments instead of eye-rolling hijinks. Some of the characters were quirky and absolutely hilarious, while others were just painful. I’m also kind of confused at why the entire school cared that two people broke up? It’s just a high school relationship, move on with your day!

Teens/tweens will resonate with this and enjoy the banter between the many points of view. As an adult, I found it exhausting. It just goes to show that you can’t believe everything you hear.

*First Line Friday* The Cold is in Her Bones- Peternelle van Arsdale

Happy Friday! Hope the New Year is treating everyone well so far.

This week we’re going with a book that I’m currently reading and loving. Who doesn’t love a Medusa inspired book?

40240290   Milla knows two things to be true: Demons are real, and fear will keep her safe.

Milla’s whole world is her family’s farm. She is never allowed to travel to the village and her only friend is her beloved older brother, Niklas. When a bright-eyed girl named Iris comes to stay, Milla hopes her loneliness might finally be coming to an end. But Iris has a secret she’s forbidden to share: The village is cursed by a demon who possesses girls at random, and the townspeople live in terror of who it will come for next.

Now, it seems, the demon has come for Iris. When Iris is captured and imprisoned with other possessed girls, Milla leaves home to rescue her and break the curse forever. Her only company on the journey is a terrible new secret of her own: Milla is changing, too, and may soon be a demon herself.

*Review* Any Second- Kevin Emerson

38885432   Five years after being kidnapped, Elian’s captor sends him into the mall–with a bomb strapped to his chest.

Across the mall is Maya, a girl whose crippling anxiety holds her prisoner in its own way.

Whether it’s chance or fate, Maya keeps Eli from ending them all. And now nothing is the same. Drawn together by their dark pasts, Maya and Eli know it takes only seconds for their entire worlds to change. But time will tell if meeting each other will change them for better or worse.IMG_2250

My Review:

“They were alive, invincible, and yet already dead. They were everything and nothing.”

Life is precious and something a lot of us take for granted but it can all be over with a blink of an eye. It only takes one second for your life to change and Maya and Eli know this first hand.

Eli walks into a crowded mall with bombs strapped to him because Gabriel (his captor) wants to send a message. Maya is at that mall and sees a boy wearing a wolf mask acting strangely. At the right moment, she walks over and puts herself in danger to save others.

When the bomb doesn’t detonate, she helps him lose track of the kidnappers brainwashing and gives him comfort as the police take over.

This story is their live’s after that day, how they cope, how they live, and the haunting memories that flood back as the anniversary draws near.

Any Second will rip your heart out and make you feel for these characters. The brutal things that they have gone through and the heartbreaking outcomes. Eli and Maya have such a strong personal connection that will make you see the best in people. They only want to help each other overcome and grow and makes you want to do the same with your life. It breaks apart what you ever thought about another and makes you see inside their minds and their hearts.

This is a heavy and riveting story that won’t be for everyone. There are some triggers in here but I think everyone needs to read this important novel. It’s something that is going to stick with you well after you completed it.

Goodreads Monday! 12/3/18

There are so many amazing books out there and I know that as much as we may try, we can’t read them all.
This feature is to honor those books that we thought sounded good, but never actually got around to reading them.

This week I’m going with a book that I’ve had on my TBR for a few years now. I have an arc of this book and it’s just sitting in my book closet. I love Alice in Wonderland and I adore weird retellings. Maybe it fell down the rabbit hole…….

My pick this week is The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor.

44170   Alyss of Wonderland?
When Alyss Heart, newly orphaned heir to the Wonderland throne, flees through the Pool of Tears to escape her murderous Aunt Redd, she finds herself lost and alone in Victorian London. Befriended by an aspiring author named Lewis Carrol, Alyss tells the violent, heartbreaking story of her young life. Alyss trusts this author to tell the truth so that someone, somewhere will find her and bring her home. But he gets the story all wrong. He even spells her name incorrectly!

Fortunately, Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan knows all too well the awful truth of Alyss’ story – and he’s searching every corner of our world to find the lost princess and return her to Wonderland, to battle Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.

The Looking Glass Wars unabashedly challenges our Wonderland assumptions of mad tea parties, grinning Cheshire cats, and a curious little blond girl to reveal an epic battle in the endless war for Imagination.
