Chasing helicity by ginger zee

Ahh another ginger zee book that was on tap for me. When was able to get this arc I was jumping and down like crazy reason being is when I’m not reading one of my other passions is weather and have had that passion since a young age. So when you see this book you think tornado and weather plus in the title is helicity which means to spin. Which it def is. And this book is about 13 year old helicity who is about to thru a major change. Where at start of the book helicity is frustrated with her family since helicity in high school wants to get into honors classes but her parents don’t so she gets frustrated and takes her horse for a ride. Along the ride she starts to see a storm go up and watches it till suddenly see’s the storm getting violent. As she rushes home a tornado forms and thru her eyes watches as her town gets destroyed. Rest of the book picks where her town is leveled and suffering slightly what most victims go thru with ptsd and see’s how her life’s changed. All this was amazingly displayed and loved it as weather nerd and storm chasers. After this though book goes down hill. I’m going go do *spoilers now* I usually don’t but I need to get it out their and just preying its the arc and just not finished. But after town is destroyed. Her dad is blaming helicity for her star studded football player getting hurt. But after the hospital he is home complaining of pain takes meds doctor gave. Then it seems not a week later or 2 he is out of pills and dad gets more and sayes that the brother gets guilty look when helicity looks at him or thoughts but doesn’t think much more. I get it’s middle grade and saw the hints what brother was doing but doesn’t go into details. Another thing that happens is later bring a crush for helicity. He is 17 year old guy has the excitement for weather and young and immature like a lot of young storm chasers but way he acts it has sooo many vibes of some famous chaser or chasers, one I know ginger zee dated. Aka reed timmer. Who was on the show storm chasers on discovery channel. The guy in this book still seems cool but then later wants the photo so bad that helicity took of the tornado and he later sells it and gives most of money to helicity. She is mad that he did it with no thought to ask. And ginger trying to show that helicity doing stuff just for love of weather and not sell and the guy gets absolutely no repercussion from it at all. Forgot to add with the brother is at one point helicity hanging with brother and goes pick something up and is with brother and sayes gets up again and brother is looking odd. Later on the trip she is missing some money from her purse. Again this hints at things but then just left open ended. Last very last part of the book she is able to go on a storm chase with a meterlogist/ storm chaser and her guy crush. And it’s been raining hard in city their in for days. The guy and helicity find a time where with out asking takes the car to chase a storm and the kid is driving aggressive and fast and just being dangerous with helicity wanting to get out. Well he puts it through a flood. He gets hurt but she doesn’t. But as she is being rescued by emergency and stuff. Out comes to rescue as well is her chaser friend the meterlogist. Well let’s say one survives while other doesn’t “technically she does but in coma” but it’s left next page after that like I’m helicity I made bad decisions but I’m a survivor. 1 as a middle grade book I feel that might discourage people to not like weather or want to read books. And 2 I felt would of flowed better for storm chase she had actually gotten her tornado in a field that’s it and show she over came tornado fear while still taking the beauty of Mother Nature…. sorry I’m just so annoyed at all the things left open that are touched on then not.

3/5 stars this book could of been higher and loved it but so many flaws.

Rosie Colored Glasses- Brianna Wolfson

Rosie

Synopsis:

Sometimes even all the love in the world is not enough to save someone.

Willow Thorpe knows friction… The friction between her parents, Rosie and Rex. The friction inside herself as she tries to navigate two worlds since their divorce.

But life has not always been like this.

When Rosie and Rex first met, theirs was an attraction of opposites. Rosie lived life for those heightened moments when love reveals its true secrets. Rex lived life safely, by the rules. Common sense would say theirs was a union not meant to last, but it was genuine love.

Now Willow just wants to be with Rosie, to bask in her mother’s outsize glow and, she thinks, protection. Because Rosie is the only person who can make Willow feel totally alive and completely loved.

But as Willow and Rosie and Rex try harder and harder to stay connected as a family, Rosie’s manic tornado of love continues to sweep up everyone in sight, ultimately to heartbreaking results.

My Review:

“Because Rex Thorpe finally knew what love was. And she tasted like Pixy Stix and wore polka-dot underwear.”

This warmed and broke my heart at the same time. From the start, I knew that these characters were going to break me and I wasn’t wrong.

A truly heartwarming read that left me breathless. No words can help me express my true feelings for this book. But I do say these words with tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my arms.

This magnificent tale of family, love, and heartbreak will explore all kinds of love even if it’s tragic. I loved every page of this and I wish everyone would give this a chance. Please judge this book by its beautiful cover!

I’m forever grateful to the publisher and Goodreads for having a giveaway for this book. They helped me discover a book that will be my favorite of the year and the year just started. I’m ready to ride this emotional roller coaster again and maybe live my life a little bit like Rosie. 💋

Everless by Sara holland

When I read the description of this book I thought the movie in time with Justin Timberlake. Here is the description you get

To those who have seen it proubly think slightly the same to. So for that I was excited for it just nervous since really fully in fantasy mood and wasn’t in a contemporary mood but I tried it anyways and it is sooo good. Everless is a slow burn book just he warned but has you puzzled what will happen and such. Other thing this world makes you nervous like what would we do if time for your life was money thankfully we don’t and can live thru this. Some things I enjoyed was at first was chemistry between roan and Jules their childhood friends he is the pro CR and she was just the black smiths daughter. But had to flee because of a horriable incident. Some other things I enjoyed I didn’t catch some of the twists till further on but I liked how that happened compared to first going in and thinking something else. So if you want your mind tickled a bit I suggest this read and I can’t wait for book 2. 5/5 stars.

WWW – Wednesday Readings

Hello, again! I’m back to post about my awesome Wednesday happenings. Well, in the sense of what I am reading, what I recently finished, and what I plan on reading next. For the month of January, I’ve actually been doing really well with reading, in my opinion. I’ll most likely finish the month with reading five books and for many people, that may not seem like a lot. But for me, it definitely is, considering I usually only read one to two books a month.

Anywho, below is my WWW – Wednesday Readings!

What books am I currently reading?

An interesting fact about me (well, I think it’s interesting): Americanized: Rebel Without a Green Card is the first young adult biography I’ve read. It’s very interesting so far; definitely an enjoyable read!

What book did I recently finish?

Trust me on this: The Queen’s Rising is not a book you are going to want to miss. It was a wonderful and fast read and I was drawn into the world from page one. My review will be posted soon, but make sure this book is on your TBR radar!

What books are you currently reading or hope to read next?

In case you missed it, I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Jaime Questell, the author of By a Charm and a Curse, which hits shelves February 6. I loved the book, so I definitely recommend it. If you would like to read about the interview, you can check it out here.

Thank you all, fellow book lovers!

Happy Reading!

By A Charm and a Curse: An Interview with Jaime Questell

Good morning, awesome book lovers and book nerds! I hope everyone is having a wonderful week. I certainly am, and I am super excited to be hosting a wonderful author on our blog today!

I had the lucky opportunity to read an early copy of By a Charm and a Curse by Jaime Questell. It was a beautiful book about magic and love and what it takes to end a curse that protects those affected by it. I found Jaime’s debut novel to be refreshing and unique. This is definitely a book you are not going to want to miss, especially if you love carnivals and dark magic.

Here is the summary of By a Charm and a Curse, provided by Goodreads:

CharmLe Grand’s Carnival Fantastic isn’t like other traveling circuses. It’s bound by a charm, held together by a centuries-old curse, that protects its members from ever growing older or getting hurt. Emmaline King is drawn to the circus like a moth to a flame…and unwittingly recruited into its folds by a mysterious teen boy whose kiss is as cold as ice.

Forced to travel through Texas as the new Girl in the Box, Emmaline is completely trapped. Breaking the curse seems like her only chance at freedom, but with no curse, there’s no charm, either—dooming everyone who calls the Carnival Fantastic home. Including the boy she’s afraid she’s falling for.

Everything—including his life—could end with just one kiss.

Now doesn’t this book just sound AMAZING?! I definitely found it to be!

JaimeBut, anyway, on with the show (see what I did there)! Besides getting an early review copy of By a Charm and a Curse, I had the wonderful opportunity to interview the author of the novel, Jaime Questell. She was an absolute blast to get to know and I am very thankful to her, as well as her publicist, for letting me host her on the blog! And I find that this post is even more special because this is also my first ever interview hosted on the blog! I am super stoked for you all to get to know Jaime!

It’s time to draw the curtains aside and let the show begin!

  1. Have you always wanted to be an author? If not, what was your first dream job?

I always wanted to be a graphic designer, which is what I do now! I love it, it’s like solving puzzles with colors and shapes and text. Although, when I was younger, I was convinced I’d be a fashion designer.

  1. What was the hardest part of getting published for you?

Learning to not compare my process/reviews/expectations to my peers. It’s so hard to remember that everyone goes through struggles in the publishing industry, and just because they don’t talk about it, doesn’t mean they don’t have their own frustrations.

  1. What was your favorite part of the publishing process?

I won’t lie – I love getting ARCs. And getting to know my fellow debuts has been pretty awesome, too.

  1. Where did the inspiration come from for By a Charm and a Curse?

I had been listening to the Dresden Dolls song Coin-Operated Boy and had an image of a girl falling from a great height. That got me thinking, where did she fall from? And did she survive? What happened next? That turned into a short story, which my crit partners demanded I expand. That turned into CHARM!

  1. The curse in By a Charm and a Curse is unlike anything I’ve read! How did the idea for the curse come about?

It kind of emerged as a very warped version of the curse from Beauty and the Beast. But instead of cursing the other carnival employees and performers, I wanted to see what would happen if they benefited from the curse. How quickly would that warp them, and what would they do to keep the status quo?

(Side note: if you would like to read more about the curse, check out this post on Entangled Teen).

  1. Did you have By a Charm and a Curse mapped out before you started writing?

For the most part, I’m a huge plotter, but CHARM was just one of those things and it felt like my fingers knew what was happening almost before my brain did. It is the easiest thing I have ever written, and I hope something comes along to take that title from it!

  1. There is an array of characters in By a Charm and a Curse. Were any of those characters based on people you know?

Some have touches of people I know, and some are based on characters I like. Leslie and Lars are riffs on Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson. Gin and Whiskey have a touch of my own daughters in them. And Juliet loves food as much as I do.

  1. Who was your favorite character to write?

Whiskey has the best lines and was so much fun to write. I can’t help it – I always have a Whiskey-esque character in everything I write.

  1. Was there any specific chapter/scene you enjoyed writing the most?

I loved the scene in the gas station. It was so interesting to try to figure out what these characters, whose lives are so different from anything I’ve known, would do for fun. A gas station food fight felt very appropriate.

  1. What was it like writing in two different character perspectives?

In some ways it was harder, making sure their voices were different enough that a reader could know what chapter they were in without referencing the chapter pages, but in some ways it felt like a cheat! With two POVs, I could tell the reader things I needed them to know but that the character wouldn’t know, and it made things so much easier!

  1. If you were part of a charmed carnival, what act would you perform?

I really want to say that I’d do something graceful where I could wear a sparkly costume, like the lyra hoop, but I’m so uncoordinated. I’d probably be better off slinging cotton candy or corn dogs. 😀

  1. Were there any songs you had to listen to while writing?

Yes! Music is so helpful to me when writing. When I wrote Emma, I’d listen to this band Kitten, and when I wrote Ben, I’d listen to the Rubens. When I wanted to get the feel of the carnival, I’d listen to that Dresden Dolls song or a cover of Rock and Roll by Rasputina.

  1. As a Harry Potter fan, I have to ask: what is your Hogwarts’s House? 😊

Gryffindor! Though I think I have a touch of Slytherin, to be honest.

  1. If you could have your book turned into anything (movie, Broadway musical, dance number, etc.), what would it be?

I’d want CHARM to be one really well done season of TV. I feel like there’s more than could be fit into a movie, but not enough for multiple seasons. Though I wouldn’t say no to a movie!

  1. Any advise to writers and aspiring authors?

Self-care is so important. Whether that means taking breaks while drafting, reading to refuel your creative well, knowing when to take a step away from social media…because you can’t write when you feel like crap.

  1. Were there any books/authors that had inspiration on your work?

Too many! As I mentioned, I love Holly Black. I’m also inspired by Leigh Bardugo, Laini Taylor, Maggie Stievfater, Kelley Armstrong, Stephanie Garber, Lisa Maxwell, Zoraida Cordova…I could go on all day.

  1. What book(s) are you currently reading?

Umm, also too many! You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone by Rachel Lynn Solomon; Nothing Left to Burn by Heather Ezell; and Missing, Presumed by Susie Steiner. I’m also really exited to read The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert; Everless by SaraH Holland; Nice Try, Jane Sinner by Lianne Oelke; and American Panda by Gloria Chao.

Thank you so much, Jaime, for stopping by and I had a great time getting the chance to interview you! Thank you to Entangled Teen and Jaime’s publicist for making this possible! It was an absolutely pleasure hosting you on the blog!

By a Charm and a Curse hits shelves February 6, 2018, so don’t forget to mark your calendar! If you love magic with a mix of romance, I’d definitely add By a Charm and a Curse to your Books-to-Buy list!

That’s all for today, everyone! Thank you again to the wonderful people at Entangled Teen!

AUTHOR BIO:
Hi. I’m Micalea. Ma-call-e-uh. Weird name, I know. My mom must’ve known I was going to be odd even in the womb. I’ve written a lot of books. Like a lot. Don’t ask me how many, I don’t remember at this point. I have an unhealthy addiction to Diet Coke but I can’t seem to break the habit. I listen to way too much music and hedgehogs have taken over my life. Crazy is the word that best sums up my life, but it’s the good kind of crazy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.
